I wonder why all of a sudden I see a huge rash of hurt teens.  I mean, I only teach drama, but not only athlete after athlete this year have come into my classes with broken this or torn that, but also just regular kids who trip and fall or get into auto accidents or get hurt on the job.  Is there some sort of teen disability insurance?

And teachers, too—there’s one on my small campus who had back surgery, one who was in a car accident, one who had surgery due to Crohn’s disease.  It really has made me consider disability insurance.  I don’t know if there is a teacher disability insurance the same way that there is physician disability insurance or dentist disability insurance, but there should be.  I wonder if it would be cheaper or more expensive than those offered to the medical profession—or those offered to teens, for that matter.  I guess disability insurance is meant to protect lost wages, so maybe there really isn’t any sense in offering it to teens…but then again, they potentially lose wages, too, and they lose a lot of opportunities in school.

Is the world just getting more dangerous?  Are we pushing ourselves harder than ever?  Are things getting more competitive, with coaches pushing and pushing?  It’s something that’s really worth looking into.
